Precision screwdriver sets: what the bit count is not telling you

Precision kits are sold on piece count, which is close to meaningless. What decides whether a set opens the thing in front of you is which specific drivers it contains, how hard the steel is, and whether the handle lets you apply torque without slipping.

The four bits that matter

Consumer electronics uses a small set of fasteners repeatedly. Phillips PH000 and PH00 for laptops and interior brackets. Pentalobe P2 and P5 for many phone exteriors. Torx T3 to T6 for hinges and internal shields, often security Torx with a centre pin. Tri-point Y000 for battery and display brackets on several phone lines.

A set of twenty bits containing all of those is more useful than a set of a hundred and forty containing none. Read the bit list, not the total.

Steel hardness, and why bits round off

Bits are usually chrome-vanadium or S2 steel. S2 is harder and holds an edge longer, which matters most on the smallest sizes where a rounded tip immediately becomes useless. A rounded PH000 will chew the head of a screw and turn a ten-minute job into an extraction.

Hardness is often quoted in HRC. Anything around 58-60 HRC is reasonable for these sizes. If a listing does not state the steel type at all, assume the cheaper one.

Magnetism helps and hurts

A magnetised tip stops screws vanishing into a case, which is worth a lot. It also attracts steel filings and can hold a screw at an angle. A magnetic parts mat is the better answer: keep the tip lightly magnetised and put the screws somewhere they cannot roll.

Devices are not meaningfully at risk from these small magnets, with the exception of mechanical hard drives, which should be kept clear as a matter of habit.

The handle decides the torque

Small screws in soft alloy strip easily, so control matters more than force. A knurled metal shaft with a freely rotating cap lets you push down the axis with one finger and turn with the other, which is the grip that avoids cam-out. A plain plastic handle with no rotating cap makes that grip impossible.

An extension shaft and a flexible drive cover recessed screws that a short driver cannot reach straight-on – a common problem inside laptop hinges.

The parts that are not drivers

Opening tools matter as much as bits. A set worth owning includes a plastic spudger, a thin metal pry tool, a suction cup for lifting adhesive-backed screens, and a guitar pick or two for separating clips. Tweezers should be fine-tipped and non-magnetic.

These are the pieces that get lost or broken, so a set that sells replacements separately is worth preferring.

Storage tells you how long it will last

A hard case with a moulded tray keeps each bit in a known slot, which is how you notice one is missing before the next job rather than during it. A zip roll is compact and tends to end up with everything in one pocket. Neither is wrong; the moulded tray is easier to live with.

Static: a real risk, mostly overstated

Modern boards are more robust than the folklore suggests, but static damage is cumulative and invisible – a component weakened today fails in three months. An anti-static wrist strap clipped to a metal chassis costs very little and removes the question.

At minimum, work on a hard surface rather than carpet, and touch a grounded metal object before handling a board. Avoid doing it in socks on a dry winter day.

Batteries deserve their own rules

Lithium pouch cells in phones and laptops are punctured easily and burn when they are. Never pry against a battery, never use a metal tool near one, and if a cell is already swollen, stop: a swollen battery should be removed by someone equipped for it and disposed of at a proper collection point.

Adhesive pull-tabs are designed to release with steady, even tension. If a tab snaps, isopropyl alcohol applied at the edge softens the adhesive; heat and force do not.

Knowing when to stop

A kit makes battery swaps, fan cleaning, storage upgrades and screen replacements on older machines genuinely achievable. Board-level repair, anything behind waterproofing seals, and anything under warranty are not. Opening a sealed device usually voids the warranty even if nothing goes wrong.

The best outcome from a precision kit is a device that lasts two more years. That does not require attempting everything.

Every precision kit in our range lists the exact bit sizes it contains and the steel type, because those two facts answer the only question that matters – will this open my device without damaging the screws.
